Eskom To Resume Zimbabwe Supply

After a suspension of service South Africa’s Eskom has agreed to resume supplying Zimbabwe with electricity.

A weekly supply of 400MW has been agreed and could be effective as early as this week.

The agreement was secured by the Government of Zimbabwe, which has begun repayment of its debts to Eskom.

According to the Zimbabwean Minister of Information, Publicity & Broadcasting Services, Monica Mutsvangwa, Zimbabwe will pay Eskom US$890,000 weekly. This follows an earlier one-off payment of US$10 million towards its US$33 million debt with the South African public utility.

The provision of the 400MW will, however, be subject to energy demands in South Africa, with Eskom only obliged to provide Zimbabwe with 50MW per week in the case that it is experiencing load shedding.

Zimbabwe has been experiencing power cuts of up to 18 hours each day, with a power deficit of around 950MW.
