Namibia Announce Drought War Chest Of N$573
The President of Namibia yesterday announced the release of N$573 million to serve as a drought package and help farmers and families currently struggling due to the adverse climate conditions.
Citizens affected will receive food assistance, water tanks and livestock marketing incentives. In addition, the government announced plans to provide farmers with transport subsidies to and from grazing areas in addition to lick supplements for a core herd of 25 cattle and one bull per farmer and fodder subsidy for a core herd of 25 cattle and one bull per farmer.
The government also called on all Namibians and development partners to assist in any wat possible.
Despite early and good rainfall in the start of the rainy season back in October 2018, there was very poor follow up, this combined with high temperatures and dry conditions has cause chaos for many Namibians. The whole country is expecting a substantial reduction of at least 53 percent below last season’s harvest and over 42 percent below the 20-year average production.
