Namibia Gets New Port Terminal

Namibia has a new $200 million port terminal at Walvis Bay. Inaugurated by President Hage Geingob this weekend the terminal increases the ports total capacity from 350,000 to 750,000 containers annually.

Speaking at the ceremony President Geingob stated, “the completion of the container terminal expansion puts us on a firm trajectory towards realising our dream of transforming Namibia into an international logistics hub.”

"Zambia, Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Botswana, and Zimbabwe are among the main land linked, now sea-linked markets for seaborne transit cargo by volume going through the port of Walvis Bay", he added.

The President also noted that the development sees Namibia join the likes of Australia, Brazil, Dubai and the Netherlands in the utilisation of reclaimed land for port expansion.

The project was constructed by China Harbour Engineering Company using funds from the Government of Namibia and the African Development Bank.

It is also hoped that the terminal will also provide a boost for tourism, with a dedicated cruise liner berth and marina breakwater.
