Power cuts come at dear cost to Zimbabwe business

Zimbabwe is experiencing renewed power cuts lasting 15 or more hours a day.

Business representatives say the disruptions have resulted in companies losing up to 30% percent of their production, according to the local radio station Zi-FM.

The country produced 934 megawatts of power on Wednesday, against a daily demand of 2,000 megawatts of power.

The state power company, ZETDC, says it is facing increased demand for power as a result of increased economic activity.

It says the prolonged outages are expected to last until Friday.

Zimbabwe's government has pledged to invest more than $7bn (£6bn) to upgrade its antiquated power generation system in the coming years.
