100% pass rate at Oprah Winfrey school South Africa
All 59 final year students at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (Owag) in Pretoria have passed their exams.
A statement from the school boasted of the pupils’ success, saying “They not only leave academically successful, but they also leave resilient, courageous and tenacious”. Not only did the girls all achieve a bachelors degree but the exam results included 197 distinctions - an increase of 49 on last year.
The school was first conceived by US TV star Oprah Winfrey in 2000, following a discussion with South African President Nelson Mandela. Owlag opened its doors in 2007 and its inaugural class of 72 girls graduated in 2011.
Nationally, 11,678 candidates from 227 wrote the 2019 National Senior Certificate examination. 89% achieved a bachelor’s degree pass, according to news site TimesLIVE.
