Botswana extends nationwide lockdown

Botswana’s nationwide coronavirus lockdown, which was due to end on 30th April, has been extended by a further week, the country’s President Mokweetsi Masisi has announced.

President Masisi said the extension was based on advice from health experts, following an increase in local transmissions of the coronavirus.

The lockdown will now last until 7th May, followed by two weeks of “sequentially easing” the restrictions.

The government will use the extension to decide on a strategy for easing restrictions, which they say depends on how well citizens follow guidelines designed to curb the spread of the virus.

Botswana has 22 confirmed cases of the virus and one death.
