Mozambique suspends border crossing over Covid

Authorities in Mozambique have suspended operations in Ponta do Ouro border crossing over lack of health teams to validate Covid-19 tests.

Travellers crossing form South Africa's Kwazulu Natal to Maputo in Mozambique have been urged to use alternative crossings.

Maputo provincial health authorities are on high alert to prevent the Delta variant identified in South Africa from spreading into Mozambique.

At least one person in the western province of Tete, bordering Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe, has been infected with the Delta variant.

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi warned on Thursday that the third wave could be "more violent and more severe than the first or second waves".

He urged citizens to follow the guidelines to prevent the spread of the virus.
