SA couple arrested for holding wedding during lockdown

A bride and groom in South Africa have been arrested by police for hosting a wedding in KwaZulu Natal Province, in direct contravention of the country’s strict coronavirus lockdown measures.

Local broadcaster eNCA showed footage of the bride-to-be in the back of a police car wearing her wedding dress. It is understood that police also arrested the priest and 40 guests.

The entire party was taken to a police station near Richards Bay and are due to face charges in court on Monday.

South Africa is now on its second week of a 21-day lockdown. The country has confirmed 1,655 cases of coronavirus, including 11 deaths.

Under the new measures imposed by President Cyril Ramaphosa, residents can only leave their homes for essential trips to buy food or medicine, or to go to work as an essential worker.
