SA power cuts to continue for another day

South Africa's electricity company Eskom says it will extend scheduled blackouts into Thursday as breakdowns continued to weigh on the system.

The power cuts, known locally as loadshedding, will be implemented from 0700 GMT to 2000 GMT on Thursday, Eskom said in a statement posted on Twitter:

“#PowerAlert 1 Eskom to continue implementing Stage 2 loadshedding from 09:00 until 22:00 tomorrow as the power system is still severely constrained #Loadshedding @SABCNews @eNCA @NewzroomAfrika @News24”

The troubled utility company said constraints on the power system were likely to persist for the rest of the week.

The power cuts started on Tuesday but there's a long history of blackouts designed to prevent a total collapse of the overstretched electricity grid.
