South Africa records spike in coronavirus deaths

South Africa’s health ministry has announced 14 more deaths as a result of the coronavirus, bringing the country’s total to 48.

Health Minister Sweli Mkhize said the provinces of Limpopo and Eastern Cape had recorded their first deaths.

Kwazulu Natal province remains the worst affected region, with 20 fatalities reported thus far.

South Africa has recorded 2,605 cases of the virus since the outbreak first reached the country on 5th March. 95,060 tests have so far been carried out.

The country has been placed on a three-week lockdown until the end of April.

The restrictions, which are among the world’s most stringent, prohibit all outdoor exercise, the sale of alcohol and cigarettes, and dog-walking. Leaving your home - apart from essential trips - can result in heavy fines and even prison sentences.
