Which Instagram accounts should you be following?
Everyone needs a bit of light relief here and there, especially during times like these. And, with a lot of people with a lot more time on their hands, we thought we would bring together a list of our favourite accounts to follow on Instagram. Check it out.
1. Trevor Noah @trevornoah
South Africa’s favourite US TV show host, Trevor Noah has captured the soul of his adoptive America, rising to challenge the upper echelons of his industry.
Noah’s used his time in isolation to film The Daily Distancing Show. But he’s also been reminding us of some of his hilarious stand-up material from way back in the day. His Instagram page is littered with short clips and videos that will keep you entertained while you self-isolate.
2. Danai Gurira @danaigurira
The Walking Dead and Black Panther star, Danai Gurira, has always tried to use her platform to promote causes close to her heart.
Born in the US to Zimbabwean parents, Gurira has always felt a close connection to her parent’s birthplace. As a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, she promotes the cause of women and girls around the world, but none more so than during this pandemic.
Give her a follow to keep up with the various good causes she promotes, and a more sober perspective on troubles brought by the coronavirus.
3. Zari Hassan @zarithebosslady
The Ugandan socialite, reality star, musician, actor (whatever you like) has one of the most wholesome accounts you’ll find on Instagram. She keeps her 7.5m followers entertained with hilarious dub smashes, funny stories and cute kid pictures.
She’s also been posting makeup tutorials from her home in South Africa. Be sure to check them out on her story!
4. Steven Chikosi @stevenchikosi
The best accounts don’t always belong to the most famous people. Steven Chikosi is a professional photographer based in Harare who documents daily life in Zimbabwe. A huge fan of warm and bright colours, he expertly captures the vibrancy of his country.
5. Candice Swanepoel @angelcandices
You can’t have a list of the best Instagram accounts in Southern Africa without including the most followed account, not just in the region, but across the whole continent. Boasting an astonishing 14.3m followers, Swanepoel is one of the highest-paid models in the world, and has walked the runway for Victoria Secret, Fendi, Dior, Versace, Givenchy, Dolce & Gabbana; you name it, she’s done it.
6. Everyday Africa @everydayafrica
Armed with just an iPhone camera, Peter DiCampo and Austin Merrill started the international movement “Everyday Africa.” Their goal: photograph daily life in Africa and provide their 412,000 followers with a fresh perspective on the continent. Their subjects range from women carrying babies along a road in a suburb of Kampala, Uganda, to a taxi driver showing off his voting card during Nigeria’s elections.
