Zimbabwean novelist Tsitsi awarded Pen Pinter Prize

Zimbabwean novelist Tsitsi Dangarembga has been announced as the winner for this year's Pen Pinter Prize.

As the winner, she will be speaking at a ceremony hosted by British Library and English Pen on 11 October.

The Pen Pinter Prize is awarded annually to a writer from the commonwealth who shows a "fierce intellectual determination… to define the real truth of our lives and our societies", according to its founder Nobel laureate playwright Harold Pinter.

Ms Dangarembga has been a critic of the government in Zimbabwe.

She has in the past been arrested for protesting against the economic situation of the country and said it was "necessary" to speak out.
