Bloomberg donates US$150,000 to Harare City Council
US finance mogul and 2020 presidential hopeful Michael Bloomberg has donated US$150,000 to the Harare City Council in order to provide vital medicine to the city.
The Mayor of Harare, Herbert Gomba, announced on Tuesday the generous donation conferred through the aid agency Bloomberg Philanthropies.
Speaking to NewZimbabwe.com, Mr Gomba said "Yes it is true. We are happy as council and will continue as a collective to do more in seeking financial assistance”.
The money is earmarked for research into non-communicable diseases and cancer. Harare City Council currently runs 12 clinics and two hospitals in the city.
Bloomberg Philanthropies supports the Partnership for Healthy Cities, an aid agency set up in 2017 to provide financial assistance and technical advice to city officials.
In November last year, Bloomberg announced his intention to compete for the Democratic Party nomination in this year’s presidential elections.
