Ex-president to sue Botswana over embezzlement claim
The former president of Botswana, Ian Khama, has said he plans to sue the country’s government for defamation after he was accused of embezzling billions.
A Botswanan investigation into state corruption alleges that Mr Khama, alongside other former officials and a South African businesswoman, set up bank accounts in Hong Kong and South Africa in order to finance terrorism.
All accused deny the allegations. At a news conference in South Africa, Mr Khama described them as wild claims that were part of a state-sponsored smear campaign.
Since stepping down last year, Mr Khama has criticised current President Mokgweetsi Masisi for betraying his country and overturning vital policy, including lifting a ban on elephant hunting.
