Investigator Of Mayoral Corruption Survives ‘Assassination Attempt’

The lead investigator on a case looking into corruption allegations facing eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede has survived an alleged assassination attempt.

According to a police spokesperson the officers was shot three times as he left his home, taking a hit to the shoulder. The officer was hospitalised following the incident. While the motivation for the shooting has not yet been established, the police have confirmed that they are increasing the security for the task team working on the case.

Gumede is facing charges, along with nine others, regarding alleged irregularities relating to a 2016 R208 million waste tender at the department. She is currently on bail with the case expected to resume in January 2020 after the National Prosecuting Authority requested additional time to compile evidence for the case.
