Lesotho First Lady’s murder trial set for next month
Lesotho’s First Lady Maesaiah Thabane is to be tried next month for murdering the previous wife of her husband, Prime Minister Thomas Thabane.
According to Mampota Phakoe, a spokesperson for the magistrate’s court, the date of the trial is set for the 17th March.
The Prime Minister’s estranged wife, Lipolelo Thabane, was shot dead outside her home in 2017, just two day’s before his inauguration.
The couple were involved in bitter divorce proceedings at the time.
An arrest warrant was issued for Maessaiah Thabane on 10th January after she disappeared. She later turned herself in to be questioned by police.
Prime Minister Thabane’s party, the All Basotho Convention, have called for him to resign in the wake of the murder investigation.
Mr Thabane has agreed to step down but said it was because of his age and made no link to the investigation.
