Madagascar students protest over unpaid grants
University students in Madagascar have been taking to the streets in recent days demanding the payment of their student grants.
The students’ demonstrations initially broke out in a university in Tamatavo on the east coast before spreading to Toliara in south-west and the capital Antananarivo.
The students say they have been waiting since November 2020 to receive the grant they get from the government in order to buy food.
On Monday, students of the University of Antananarivo and those of the Polytechnic of Antananarivo were out on the streets to protest against the payment of only one month's grant out of the four they are expecting.
Four students were injured, including two who were admitted to hospital, as they confronted security forces. Two others were arrested.
The students have said they are determined to continue with the protests.
