Minister Welcomes Arrival of Pfizer Vaccines in South Africa

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has said that the country's vaccination programme reached a welcomed milestone with the arrival of 325,260 doses of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine at the OR Tambo International Airport. Following this initial delivery of the Pfizer vaccines, Mkhize said government was expecting approximately the same number of doses to arrive on a weekly basis to a total of over 1.3 million doses by the end of May 2021.

The vaccine's arrival comes as Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga and MECs met to discuss the possibility of primary school learners returning to classes on a full-time basis. As of May 3, 2021, South Africa recorded 1,584,064 confirmed cases of Covid-19 of which 122,318 proved fatal and 4,119,191 resulted in recovery.
