SA minister condemns vandalism of 183 schools

South Africa’s Education Minister Angie Motshekga has condemned the vandalism of 183 schools nationwide, which occurred during the country’s three-week lockdown to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

In some schools equipment was also stolen and the minister urged locals not to buy the stolen property.

Ms Motshekga said it was devastating to see children’s infrastructure attacked with “apparent impunity”.

She said the education ministry was working with the police to ensure timely arrests in all affected areas and encouraged the public to help by reporting potential suspects.

South Africa has experienced an increase in crime as it enters the final week of its 21-day lockdown period.

President Cyril Ramaphosa called the criminals “despicable” for taking advantage of the lockdown when state agencies are focused on alleviating the pandemic.
