US VP thanks Ramaphosa for his leadership

US Vice-President Kamala Harris has thanked South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa for his leadership on the continent.

The two met in Washington DC on Friday morning ahead of scheduled talks with President Joe Biden.

"I cannot emphasise enough how important the relationship between our countries is to the people of the United States, both in terms of our security and our prosperity," Vice-President Harris said.

Earlier, Mr Ramaphosa said that his visit to the US was about strengthening US-South Africa ties.

He also said that the US plays a "key role" on ensuring security in Africa, the AFP news agency reports.
