ZANU-PF Top of NGO’s Zimbabwe Human Rights Abuses List
A recent report published by the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum has listed the ruling ZANU-PF has the worst human rights abuser in the country.
The report covers 2018 and most of 2019 and discusses how President Mnangagwa’s government has failed to distinguish itself from that of Robert Mugabe’s.
It states that “[t]orture by the security forces remained a mainstay of the government’s abuse of human rights. Individuals who were arrested were assaulted in custody, or at the point of arrest.
“According to one NGO… ZANU-PF supporters committed 35% of the violations, ZRP committed 31% and the army committed 22%.
“Most of the cases, about 39%, occurred in Harare. Over 51% of the victims were associated with the opposition MDC Alliance, while about 10% were associated with other smaller independent political parties”.
President Mnangagwa came to power after orchestrating a military coup in 2017 to oust Robert Mugabe. The optimism and hope that accompanied his succession to power has since been replaced by repression and fear.
ZANU-PF has been accused of politicising foreign aid, only distributing food to its supports in the hope of starving out the MDC and its base.
