Zimbabwe government to increase salaries for anti-corruption officers
Zimbabwe’s government has said it is in the process of reviewing salaries for the National Prosecuting Authority in order to better deter its anti-corruption officers from accepting bribes from criminal cartels.
Prosecutor-General Kumbirai Hodzi told officials on Monday that he and President Mnangagwa had agreed to a raft of “extraordinary measures” to protect Zimbabwe’s anti-corruption workers.
“Those measures include creating a very effective fence against compromise. It has been agreed that the salary and allowances of the anti-corruption workers will be looked at in a manner that will ensure they will be free and protected”, he said.
The measures will also include accommodation and transport allowances.
The announcements come as part of a week long anti-corruption seminar for judicial officers in Harare, which began on Monday. Mr Hodzi went on in his speech to explain the problems associated with tackling modern organised crime.
“It should be noted that the criminal justice system alone is not sufficient to efficiently and effectively deal with the problem of crime and corruption,” he said of the proposed preventative measures.
