Zimbabwe: VP’s wife denied bail again

Marry Chiwenga, the estranged wife of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, was denied bail for a second time on Friday after the High Court in Harare postponed her case until next Tuesday. 

Mrs Chiwenga is being held on suspicion of attempting to kill her husband and money laundering. Her initial bail hearing was postponed last week after prosecutors told the court they were not yet ready to proceed. She denies all charges against her.

Vice President Chiwenga filed for divorce after he returned from China last month, where he was receiving treatment for a suspected poisoning. He alleges that his wife attempted to remove an intravenous drip whilst he was receiving treatment in South Africa earlier this year. Mrs Chiwenga maintains that the claims were fabricated in order for her husband to gain the upper hand in their divorce proceedings.
