Zimbabwe: VP's wife due in court over fraud
Marry Mubaiwa, the estranged wife of Zimbabwean Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga, will appear in court on Monday to face charges of money laundering and fraud.
She is facing six counts of exporting foreign currency - in breach of the Exchange Control Act - and five counts of concealing transactions involving the proceeds of crime.
The foreign currency was exported to South Africa on the pretext of buying tents and was instead allegedly used to buy a house and a luxury vehicle.
The fraud charges arose from an alleged attempt to forge a marriage certificate without her husband’s consent while he was ill.
Ms Mubaiwa is currently being held at Rhodesville police station, Harare, after being arrested on Saturday.
She has declined to comment on the charges.
Her husband, Vice-President Chiwenga, announced a renewed crackdown on corrupt leaders over the weekend.
Speaking to delegates at the Zanu-PF conference, Mr Chiwenga said, “We will arrest corrupt people. We don’t care who you are even if you know me personally we don’t care”.
