Durban to host women’s Caf league qualifiers

Durban is to host a new tournament for women’s football clubs from Southern Africa later this month to determine who will represent the region in the Caf Women’s Champions League finals in Egypt.

Running from August 26 to September 4, the Cosafa Women’s Champions League will feature South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies and six other clubs from around the region.

The winners of the tournament will earn a ticket to the finals to be staged in Cairo, the football-mad capital of Egypt, according to the organisers.

The Durban-bound clubs will play in two pools and then comes the semi-finals and the final.

South African champions Sundowns have been placed in Group A with Lesotho Defence Force, Botswana’s Double Action Ladies and Eswatini’s Manzini Wanderers. Zambian side Green Buffaloes head up a three-team Group B which includes Black Rhinos Queens of Zimbabwe and Tura Magic from Namibia.

Historic first club tournament

“We are delighted that Durban has shown its commitment to women’s football with the staging of our crucial TotalEnergies Caf Women’s Champions League Cosafa Qualifier,” Cosafa general secretary Sue Destombes said.

“This competition serves not only as a historic first club tournament for Cosafa, but is also the qualifier for the inaugural TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League that will be staged in Cairo later this year. Our plans for a Cosafa Women’s Champions League have been long in the making and we are delighted to have found such [a] world-class host as Durban for us to launch this new era in our football.”

The matches will take place at King Zwelithini Stadium and Chatsworth Stadium and will be televised.
