Nigerian Women’s Team Defeat South Korea At World Cup
Nigeria’s Super Falcons on Wednesday recorded the first win of the tournament for an African team at the 2019 Women’s World Cup. South Africa and Cameroon are also among the 24 teams competing for the $30 million prize and trophy.
The Nigerian team beat South Korea 2-0 in their second group A fixture, following a defeat to Norway in their opening match 3-0.
The first goal of the match was an own goal by Korea’s Kim Doyeon, followed by the winning goal scored by Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala in the second half. After two matches the Super Falcons now stand on three points.
The team’s final group match will be against France.
Nigeria has the strongest track record among African sides in the tournament, having previously reached the quarterfinals in 1999. They are also the reigning African champions. The 2019 tournament represents South Africa’s first appearance in the contest
