South Africa’s Football Coach Resigns

Coach Stuart Baxter has resigned his position with the South African national football team this week.

His resignation follows the conclusion of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in which South Africa reached the quarterfinal stages.

Addressing a news conference Baxter explained that he had been reflecting on the recent AFCON performance.

“Going to Afcon, this squad had not lost in a year, something that was not easy considering we were introducing new players.

“I feel it’s time for someone else to take over and I have decided to resign from my position. It is my personal decision.”

Baxter has completed two stints with the team, one between 2004 and 2006, and the second between 2017 and 2019. He was re-signed in 2017 on a five year contract.
