Zambia: Women’s football team qualify for 2020 Olympics
Zambia’s women’s football team have qualified for their first ever Olympic Games after beating Cameroon 2-1 in Lusaka.
Having lost to Cameroon 3-2 in the first leg, Zambia’s women pulled through to win on away goals, drawing 4-4 on aggregate.
Early goals came from Mary Mwakapila and Hellen Mubanga in the first half, but it came down to a nerve-wracking 92nd minute strike from Nchout Ajara to finally secure victory for the Copper Queens.
The team were rewarded with cheers of celebration as they secured their place in Tokyo this summer.
Zambia are only the fifth African team to reach the Olympics for women’s football, following in the footsteps of Cameroon, Nigeria, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
