Lusaka mayor investigated over alleged assault

The mayor of Zambia’s capital Lusaka, Miles Sampa, is being investigated by police for alleged assault.

Zambia police spokesperson Esther Katongo confirmed that Mr Sampa allegedly attacked the manager of a privately owned cemetery, Lawrence Nsoma, hitting him in the face with a stick.

The incident is believed to have occurred at Mr Sampa’s home on 30th May.

The police received a call from the Lusaka mayor later that evening at 23:00, saying that six people were trespassing in his home and harassing his workers. Mr Sampa has so far declined to comment.

Investigations have been launched into both matters.

A video showing the alleged assault has gone viral on social media. It appears to depict Mr Sampa whipping Mr Nsoma and telling him never to come to his home again.
