Thousands blocked from entering Harare

Zimbabwean troops and police have blocked thousands of people from entering central Harare because of a spike in coronavirus cases.

Buses, trucks, and private cars were held up and only essential workers such as health workers were allowed to proceed.

Shops in the central business district were ordered to close. No similar action was reported in other urban centres. Zimbabwe's main opposition MDC party said the government was using the measure to inhibit opponents.

A strict lockdown was imposed in March but relaxed somewhat last month.

Proven cases of coronavirus have trebled in the past month to 203, with four confirmed deaths.
