South African ‘Cape to Cairo’ Pilots Killed

South African pilots Des Werner and Werner Froneman have died in a light plane crash in Tanzania this weekend. 

The pair had recently taken part in the Cape to Cairo challenge in which they successfully flew a home-built aircraft across the continent. 

The crash occurred shortly after take off from Tabora airport as they travelled from Uganda to Malawi via Tanzania. Fire engulfed the plane, leaving only the engine and a few parts.

Confirming the accident U Dream Global stated, “Cape to Cairo Challenge is devastated to report that there has been an accident of the flight support aircraft and that the Project Directors, Des Werner and Werner Froneman, have lost their lives. No one else was involved in the accident.

We kindly request everybody’s understanding at this incredibly difficult time.

Our love and thoughts go to Des and Werner’s friends and families.”
