ANC bans umbrellas at anniversary rally

South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress, has banned supporters from carrying umbrellas to shield themselves from the sun at a rally to celebrate the party’s 108th year.

The party did not give a reason why, but instead urged those wishing to attend to take other precautions, such as sun cream, hats and caps.

The ANC said the weather looks set to reach 31C in Kimberly, Northern Cape Province, where the rally to due to take place.

The party said in a statement, “The ANC calls on all people to take necessary precautions to ensure that the celebration proceed well without incident… No umbrellas will be allowed in the stadium during the celebration”.
