Zambians Protest Government Corruption

Zambian citizens this weekend took to the streets of Lusaka to protest against government corruption.

Frustration with government’s failure to address the issue has been growing in recent years, with civil society organising several marches to put pressure on President Edgar Lungu to take action.

The latest protests were led by popular Copperbelt musician Pilato and civil society activity Laura Miti, and saw citizens dressed in yellow wave yellow cards to register their rejection of graft.

Pilato has previously been incarcerated on several occasions for his anti-government lyrics and both he and Miti has previously faced arrest for picketing parliament over past scandals.

Speaking on the protests Alliance for Community Action leader Miti stated “We will not accept the country to be destroyed while we watch… We can't have few people that are getting rich and the majority are poor. This country is rich but the problem is how it is governed."
