2019 Women’s World Cup Kicks Off

The 2019 Women’s World Cup is now underway in France, with the African continent represented by teams from South Africa, Nigeria and Cameroon.

The tournament, which was launched in 1991, takes place once every four years and will see 24 teams compete for prize money of $30 million.

To date the U.S. has had the most success as three-time champions. Among African teams Nigeria has historically progressed the furthest, reaching the quarterfinals in 1999. The Nigerian side are also the reigning African champions. However, they lost their first match this weekend to Norway 3-0.

Nigeria faces Korea, Norway and hosts France in the Group A fixtures. Meanwhile, South Africa faces two-time champions Germany, China and Spain, and Cameroon faces Canada, New Zealand and the Netherlands in Group E.
