All Change After AFCON 2019

Following the conclusion of the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt last week a number of team coaches has resigned their positions. 

Among the casualties were the Zimbabwean team’s coach, Sunday Marimo Chidzambga. Despite having seen the team win four regional COSAFA titles, the Zimbabwean side departed AFCON 2019 following the group stages after they scored just one point. 

Moroccan coach Herve Renard also quite following his team’s unexpectedly early exit. Renard claimed the decision had been taken ahead of the tournament.  

Meanwhile Cameroon’s coach Clarence Seedorf was fired after the team was knocked out in the final 16 stage on the back of a 3-2 loss to Nigeria. 

The Guinean coach Paul Put was also sacked following the team’s exit, as was Tanzania’s coach Emmanuel Amunike.

The Ugandan Football Federation has stated that is has mutually agreed to part way with the national team’s coach Sebastien Desabre, while Namibia’s coach Ricardo Mannetti departs after the decision was made not to renew his contract.

The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament concluded with Algeria defeating Senegal 1-0 in the final to bag the title and a US$4.5 million prize. It is the second time the North African team have won, having previously claimed victory in 1990 when they beat Nigeria 1-0. The 2019 tournament saw 24 teams from across the continent participate in Egypt, with the event generating more than US$80 million in profit.
