South Africa’s Schoenmaker Takes Silver

South African swimmer Tatjana Schoenmaker has won the silver medal in the women’s 200m breaststroke event at the 2019 FINA World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea.

She finished second with a time of 2:22:52, coming in behind Russia’s Yuliya Efimova at 2:20:17, but ahead of Canada’s Sydney Pickrem at 2:22:90.

Her medal is the first for a South African female athlete at the FINA World Championships.

South Africa was also represented by Kaylene Corbett in the event. Corbett finished in eighty position with a time of 2:26:62. 

Schoenmaker’s silver follows a bronze medal win for Chad le Clos earlier in  week for the 200m butterfly. Le Clos is also set to compete in the finals of the men’s 100m butterfly, after qualifying in fourth place.
