Algeria Triumphs As AFCON Concludes
The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament concluded this weekend with Algeria defeating Senegal 1-0 in the final to bag the title and a US$4.5 million prize. It is the second time the North African team have won, having previously claimed victory in 1990 when they beat Nigeria 1-0.
The winning goal was secured early on in the match by Baghdad Bounedjah. While Senegal fought back hard they failed to land any shots on goal.
The Senegalese Teranga Lions head home with US$2.5 million and an improved performance on the 2017 tournament, when they lost during the quarterfinals. Senegal is yet to win the title, although they previously made the finals in 2002.
The 2019 tournament saw 24 teams from across the continent participate in Egypt, with the event generating more than US$80 million in profit.
